It is. At least you know Joe wasn't just gifted his black belt.

How long has Joe been training jitz, like since white belt?

    Google says since '96.

  • @Zornes That makes it even more impressive. How easy would it be for other people to quit in those eight years?

No he does not. But he is very inspiring to people like me who have plateaued in jiu jitsu. I know a bunch of guys who have quit because they felt they were purple belts too long.

I know a few guys like that too. I grew up around jiu-jitsu, my father is a black belt. I recently had to quit because I have a torn ACL and no insurance. Every damn day, I think, I can't wait to roll again. Had to quit aikido too. Shit, I can barely work out.

That is so dumb, you can be a highly skilled purple belt. Chasing colors is missing the point imo.

  • @Zornes That's rough, buddy. Hopefully you'll heal up soon because if I was in your shoes I'd have no idea what I'd do without being able to work out.

@dhizzo I know right? It's nice having something to indicate your efforts and such, but to chase a belt is just plain missing the point.

  • @dhizzo I agree, its completely missing the point, I'm chasing my second stripe on my white belt (which will be within the next few weeks) because at that time I can do the live rolling at my school, after my second stripe I give no fucks about advancement or when it is happening because I have fun and to me that's the most important part.

@Solidus who are you training under? I live rolled day 1, and we go white-blue-purple... no stripes,

I go to a Gracie Humaita Winnipeg, which is a legit Gracie school, not one of the fake ones.

Not to say your school is inferior, it's actually a good idea, so many dudes get worked over and quit.

  • I am on an Amal Easton school in Colorado, Renzo Gracie affiliated. I have seen some kids in there on their first day and there is no way in fuckin hell they would have been able to live roll on day one haha, I really like the school I go to, I think they just want people to know the basics of what they are doing before they attend the live rolls

  • Joe's training was a bit sporadic because of injury. He is a disciplined and dedicated athlete...Props to him from this white belt (Jorge Gurgel, Cincinnati, OH)
  • A kind of like the idea of rolling on your first day. Maybe I'm biased, though, because that's how every school I've been to operates. I remember getting my ass handed for a while before I started submitting guys. I can see how it'd be discouraging, though.

  • i'm really surprised people are making a scuff about how long it took him to achieve this status. This is someone who has had a professional career in the entertainment business for over a decade. To achieve that level for something he considers a hobby is cool in my book.

I think some of that may be because folks don't understand just how difficult it is to advance in BJJ, especially at a reputable school like 10th Planet. the time it took was not terribly long, especially when you consider his injuries, brutal work schedule, family life...etc

  • Most BJJ black belts I know only got it after well over a decade of near daily practice, so 16 years is only a little more than the average I've seen. I don't think anyone on this thread is making a "scuff" about it.

you should check out the gracie combatives online with a buddy for some preparation, punch block defense from guard, basic submissions, some sweeps, itll take you a few months to get a really good flow but its fun as hell dude."

I am 45 and only reformed my diet and lifestyle in the last 2 years (became vego, stopped drinking, started exercising, upped the Pure Land Buddhist & Hare Krishna chanting etc).
Although a fan of BJJ for 20 years it was Joe & Eddie who inspired my as they are older dudes who were keepin' on keepin' on.

Thanks to the guys I started the Gracie University On-Line BJJ course about 3 months ago with a buddy (who is about 6 inches & 20kg bigger than me). GOLD!
Best part is that you can learn cooperatively and help each learn rather than being in ego driven competition.
I initially went to a few schools here in Oz but found that macho egos seemed to take pleasure in fucking newbs. One asshole arm barred me 5 times on my first day = 3 month healing from hyper extended elbow. Never went back.
Super cheap and super fun - DO IT!

    Tap early, and tap often.

Nothing better than a highly competitive roll, where you spend 10-15minutes and no one gets tapped.

  • The yoga studio I go to (Asta Yoga) and 10th Planet SF are within a block of each other. I should be getting a raise next month and then it's on.

I've rolled a bit over the years when I was doing Muay Thai, but never with consistency.

I've only been in one bar fight in my adult life and I won with a takedown and choke I learned in the first BJJ class I ever took. It worked like magic.

It's pretty cool to be able to say you kicked someone's ass without anyone getting hurt.

Of course, dude. I really know how to tap - LOL! But there is no accounting for douche bags as in my example = find another school. However, geography limits options for some of us.
IMHO GU is a great way to get the basic skills down BEFORE dealing with strangers in schools.

I really just lurk on that forum, but the topics covered are really similar to the DTFH. There is a "use your real name" policy that has a tremendous effect on the reduction of douchery.

Not likely, I'm guessing a bunch of us were introduced to Duncan because of Joe Rogan. Congratulations to Joe. That was awesome, I was genuinely happy for him watching that video. I think that shows a lot about how we feel connected to people through these podcasts. It's like listening to a buddy talk for a few hours, you get to know them pretty well.

  • Ultimate sambo Like ju jitsu is an amalgamation of the most effective grappling, striking, submission, and take downs. It harnesses the practical aspects of all martial arts. It is a martial art that Is used by the russians and taught to their military.
